disk 07 - track 04
- Promise The Moon
[1986 - with Tommy Thayer]
'Promise
The Moon" is
based on a 70s song called “Sentimental Fool” that Bob Kulick
and Gene Simmons wrote together. When Gene Simmons was producing
BLACK 'N BLUE, he suggested the song to Tommy Thayer and Jaime
St. James. They came back with a newer song “Promise The Moon”
with new lyrics, slightly different melody, but still using the
same chords and riff that Bob Kulick and Gene Simmons had come
up with years ago.
Demoed with (members of) BLACK 'N BLUE with Gene Simmons on lead
vocals.
The song has been recorded by BLACK 'N BLUE for their 1986 “Nasty
Nasty” album, with keyboards being
performed by John Purdell. At the last moment the song was
dropped in favor of the more commercial Jonathan Cain penned
“I’ll Be There For You”.

- All You Want’s A
Piece Of My Heart [1988 - with Tommy Thayer]
The "Suspicious" demo recording is Gene Simmons vocal take of a song that
appeared on BLACK 'N BLUE’s 1988 “In
Heat” album. The book doesn’t clarify
the players, but you can distinctly hear Jaime St. James singing
background vocals. Otherwise, in “The Vault” book Gene wrote
“And the guys went off and wrote the song”, which makes it
logical that this take is musically demoed by BLACK 'N BLUE.
"All You Want’s
A Piece Of My Heart" is simply Gene Simmons singing / scatting on one
of Adam Mitchell’s songs with Tommy Thayer on guitar and
background vocals.
From the folks involved, this recording dates from BLACK 'N BLUE
1988 “In
Heat” sessions, when Adam Mitchell was
involved in co-writing with Jamie St. James and Tommy Thayer.

- Everybody Knows #1 [1988 ? - Tommy Thayer]
"Are
You A Boy, or Are You A Girl" is a mid-tempo Rocker, demoed with Eric Carr on drums and Tommy
Thayer on guitar.
The lyrics were never finished, so you hear Gene Simmons doing
some scat vocals through the melody.
"Now That Your
Gone #3" is a heavier reinterpretation of the 70’s song (see
disk 05 - track
11), Recorded at the Fortress Studio, Los Angeles, CA prior the
“Hot In The Shade” recording sessions, with Kevin Valentine on
drums and Tommy Thayer on guitars. Engineered by Pat Regan.
"Everybody Knows #1" was originally released on a bonus CD in the lunch box
version of the audio book for Gene's book "Sex
Money KISS” and on the Japanese
version of Gene's 2004 “Asshole”
album. The version on The Vault is identical through the first
45 seconds, then the arrangement and lyrics change. Featuring
Tommy Thayer on a 12 string guitar mimicking Ace Frehley’s intro
of “Rock Bottom”.

- Everybody Wants Somebody [late 1991 - with Tommy Thayer]
"Everybody
Wants Somebody" is a Low-fidelity demo, where the basic ideas being captured, using
the chord patterns Gene had worked on with Bob Dylan (“Na Na Na
Na” – see
disk 05 - track
08), with a slightly different
melody. This demo is recorded with Tommy Thayer on acoustic
guitar.
Later, both songs would be morphed together to create a song
called “Waiting for the Morning Light” (see
disk
6, track 01) which ended up on Gene
Simmons 2004 “Asshole”
album.

- Turn To
Stone [1993 with Tommy Thayer]
The intro of the song is recorded on a tape
recorder in a hotel room before the track turns in fleshed-out
version. Recorded with Tommy Thayer in a demo studio. "Turn
To Stone" was among the dozens ideas submitted
by Gene for the “Psycho Circus” (1998) album.
A short sample of the song appeared on Gene Simmons “Speaking
In Tongues” DVD (2004). Sound-wise “I
Turn To Stone” would fit on the “Hot In The Shade” (1989) album.

You Wanted The Best
[1998 - with Tommy Thayer]
"Just Gimme
Love #2" is another demo attempt in developing the song, that would be
ultimately become “You Wanted The Best”. Recorded with Tommy
Thayer on guitar.
The "Bells
Of Freedom" demo features Tommy Thayer on guitar.
The demo of
"Roar Of The Greasepaint" is the precursor to “Journey Of 1.000 Years”, many of the
elements of the of the 1998 “Psycho Circus” song are present, as
are Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer on this recording.
With "You
Wanted The Best" approaching its final form, Gene demoed
the song with
Tommy Thayer on guitar singing all the vocals himself. Where he
planned the other members to sing he shout out there names as
placeholders. Lyrics are not complete, so there is some scatting
in sections.

"Sweet
& Dirty Love" is recorded with Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer
with it approaching the form that would be used on Gene Simmons
2004 “Asshole”
album, which 2004 version features Bruce Kulick on guitar.
Originally written and demoed as “Jelly Roll” in 1975/1976 (see

disk 08
- track 09 - Hit The Ground
[200.. ? - with
Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer]
"Are
You Ready" likely dates
from “Sonic Boom” recording sessions with Tommy Thayer and Eric
Singer. The song was also mentioned for inclusion on the
“Monster” (2012) album.
"Hand
Of Fate' is recorded ‘live’ at a rehearsal
studio in Los Angeles with Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer. After
that Gene Simmons took the track to his home studio to add
multi-layered harmonies (with the help of Engineer Pat Regan),
re-arranged it and put additional stuff to it. Riff-wise (as
well as the main vocals) the song sounds like a cross between
“God Of Thunder” and “Within’” riff-wise, filled with some clean
vocal backing harmonies …
"Rocked It All
Night" is written and demoed for “Sonic Boom”, it recycled the “All The
Kids In Painted Faces” and “You Drive Us Wild, We’ll Drive You”
Crazy lyrics.
It’s likely includes Eric Singer on drums and Tommy Thayer on
guitar.
"Hit The Ground (Put Your Money Where Your
Mouth Is)" is demoed with Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer.
The recording is the initial sketch with scat vocals, so there
are no lyrics for the song yet.
