"Hard For Me" Extra Notes
(by Julian Gill / Jelle Jansen) :
Originally titled "You Make It Hard For Me" has long been known as a title of a song that Ace
Frehley wrote with Sebastian Bach prior to the start of the KISS
"Psycho
Circus" sessions.
The song was demoed by Ace Frehley, Sebastian Bach, Richie Scarlett, and Anton Fig.
At the time it was apparently close to making the album, but was eventually cut. According to Sebastian, "I talked to Gene Simmons and I asked him what happened and he said he didn't want any songs about sex on the new record because he had done so many songs like that" (ballbustermusic). As the title would suggest, there is some sexual innuendo reminiscent to KISS' own "(You Make Me) Rock Hard" from the "Smashes, Thrashes, and Hits" album released in 1988, though the lyrics (see below) are a bit more direct. It is also ironic to hear the suggestion that Gene didn't want the song on the album for sexual reasons (especially when fans were being sold the line that producer Bruce Fairbairn was in ultimate control of what was recorded for the
album, but that's another aside)...
At the time it was easy to accept Sebastian's comment blaming Gene
for the lack of the song's inclusion on the album. It was known that
a lot of music had been written and had not made the album, not just
Ace's material.
The copyright registration of a 1994 version with the title "You Make It Hard For Me"
is credited to Ace Frehley and
Marty Kupersmith, and is released on his 1996 album " Marty
Kupersmith had been a member of Jay & The Americans (a band with ties to Paul Stanley's Uncle Joe band) and had written
"We
Got Your Rock" in 1983 - it soon found itself to Ace and turned up on his first post-KISS solo album.
From the Frehley/Kupersmith copyright it was noted that the song was
written in 1985. Marty had copy-written the song (PAu-1-829-029) in
early 1994 - correctly noting Ace's co-writing contribution. So, it
would seem that the 1998 song borrowed at least the title from the
1985 composition. Additionally, Marty had released his version of
the song on his 1996 album, "It'll
Come To You" This release of the song could go some way
to explaining the song's absence from "Psycho Circus" and further
Ace Frehley interest.
The demo recording of the song with Ace Frehley, Sebastian Bach,
Richie Scarlett, and Anton Fig, is described in Sebastian Bach's
book "18 And Life On Skid Row" (Chapter's 12 and 15). In 2009 the
song ended up on Ace Frehley's "Anomaly"
album with new lyrics entitled "Foxy
& Free". According to Sebastian
Bach, the 2009 version of the song is the same as the way they
recorded it halfway the 90's ..., but without the co-writing credits
for Bach. Finally, the original demo of "You Make It Hard For
Me" is released in 2017, as one of the bonus tracks on the "Anomaly
DeLuxe Edition".
"Outer Space" Extra Notes by
Mike Osegueda / The Fresno Bee :
Jesse Mendez and David Askew penned the song "Outer Space," which is the first single off
Ace Frehley's album "Anomaly".
"It's one of my heroes singing my words and playing my riffs," says Askew, 44. "I'm just kind of beside myself with the whole thing still." Adds Mendez, 40: "I'm still soaking it all in. I'm excited, but the same time I don't know what's going to happen next." Neither of them ever guessed this would happen.
The year 2000 was the song's genesis. Askew started it on his acoustic guitar in his apartment and took it into the studio to finish with Mendez. At the time, they were playing together in a band called Shredmill.
They thought the song was good, recorded it as a demo and sent it around to record labels hoping for a bite. Nothing came.
The song sat, untouched and not totally finished for years. Mendez and Askew kept playing music in various bands, not really concerned with "Outer Space." The song came back into their orbit when Frank Munoz, who managed Mendez's band Tte Napoleon Blown Aparts, started working with Frehley.
Munoz remembered "Outer Space" and thought it would fit well with the album Ace was planning.
"We were putting together the track list for the CD and we both agreed that 'Outer Space' would be a great re-introduction of my persona -- the Spaceman -- to my fans," Frehley said via e-mail.
"It's a heavy song." Mendez met with Frehley a few times during the recording process, as the song got adjusted and tinkered to fit Frehley's style.
"I didn't know what to expect," Mendez says. "Him being in Kiss and doing what he's done and being where he's been. But he was really down-to-earth. We had a few discussions over sushi." Now both Mendez and Askew are hoping this leads to more than just dinner.
They'll get a percentage of the sales from the single and from the album.
Plus, if the song ever gets used in video games, movies, commercials or anything else, they'd get a cut of that too.
Shredmill's original demo version of "Outer Space" appears on "A
World With Heroes - KISS 40th Anniversary Tribute Album" which
is released August 2013 (Disc 1 Track 14).
